NotebookLM is Google’s research notebook. You upload sources (PDFs, Google Docs, web pages, YouTube links), and it grounds all of its answers strictly in those sources — drastically reducing hallucinations. Its 'Audio Overview' feature generates a podcast-style discussion between two AI hosts summarizing your sources.

Quick start

Go to notebooklm.google.com and sign in with a Google account — free tier is fully functional.
Create a new Notebook, then add sources: PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube links, web URLs, or pasted text. Each notebook holds up to 50 sources.
Ask questions — every answer cites the exact source paragraph with a footnote link, so no hallucination outside your material.
Open the Studio panel → "Audio Overview" → wait ~5 min → you get a 5–15 min podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts summarizing your sources.
Try "Interactive Mode" in audio to interrupt the hosts with a live question. Plus / AI Ultra adds video overviews, mind maps, and bigger source limits.

Pick it if You want to deeply understand a fixed set of sources — research papers, interview transcripts, product docs — and you value citations over creative generation.

Skip it if You want open-ended web research or "answer this with citations from anywhere" — Perplexity is the better fit. NotebookLM's strength is exactly the opposite: it'll refuse to answer outside what you uploaded.
