ChatGPT

OpenAI’s general-purpose assistant with browsing, code, and now agent capabilities.

Our take

The default starting point for most people — Deep Research and agent features keep pushing what a chat assistant can do.

What it is

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s flagship conversational assistant. Beyond chat, it now includes web browsing, code execution, image generation, the GPTs marketplace, Deep Research (long-running research agents), and Operator-style browser agents on higher tiers. It is the most widely used AI assistant in the world.

Best for

  • General Q&A and writing
  • Deep Research across the web over many minutes
  • Running small automations via GPTs

Pros

  • Broadest capability set of any single assistant
  • Massive ecosystem of custom GPTs
  • Constantly updated with new agent features

Cons

  • Generalist — specialists beat it on narrow tasks
  • Higher tiers (Pro, Operator) are expensive

Quick start

  1. Go to chatgpt.com (or chat.openai.com) — sign up free with email or Google.
  2. Free tier runs GPT-4o mini with caps; ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) unlocks GPT-4o, o-series reasoning, image generation, longer uploads.
  3. Pro tier ($200/mo) adds Operator (browser agent), Sora, Codex agent, and unlimited o-series.
  4. Click "GPTs" in the sidebar → explore the marketplace or build your own; pin your favorites to the top.
  5. For research, click "Deep Research" → ask a complex question; it browses 20+ sources and returns a cited report in 5–30 min.
  6. Use Custom Instructions to lock in tone + format across all chats; turn Memory on to persist facts between sessions.

Sample input / output

Input
Deep Research task:
"Compare the pricing models and quota enforcement of ChatGPT Pro ($200/mo) vs Anthropic Max ($200/mo) vs Gemini Ultra as of July 2026.

For each: list actual monthly cap structure, rate limits per hour, what's throttled vs hard-stopped, and which tier is best for someone running 2 concurrent agents 8h/day."

Plus a side input: paste the latest Anthropic pricing PDF.
Output
Deep Research completed in 11 min, 28 sources cited.
Report structure:
  - Direct comparison table (Pro / Max / Ultra)
  - Rate-limit breakdown: GPT Pro 200 msg/3h on o3; Max 200 msg/5h on Sonnet 4; Ultra 1.5× Pro
  - Cost per 8-hour agent runtime estimate ($9.40 Pro / $11.20 Max / $12.80 Ultra)
  - Recommendation: Pro for breadth; Max for quality + 1M context
Final report: 4,200 words, with inline citations and 1-click export to PDF / Google Doc.

Should you pick this?

Pick it if You want the broadest single-assistant capability set — chat, image gen, code execution, browsing, Deep Research, custom GPTs — backed by the largest 3rd-party ecosystem.
Skip it if You're already paying for Anthropic and value long-context safety steerability more than raw breadth (Claude wins on writing quality), or you want a fully open-weights stack (DeepSeek / Qwen).
